Democratic activist Stacey Abrams is once again running for governor of Georgia.

“I’m running for governor because opportunity in our state shouldn’t be determined by zip code, background or access to power,” Abrams said in a statement.

Abrams, 47, announced her 2022 bid on Nov. 30. She was defeated by current Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp in the 2018 election.

“If our Georgia is going to move to its next and greatest chapter, we’re going to need leadership,” she said in a campaign video.

Abrams, a former Georgia House of Representatives minority leader, still maintains that she would have won the 2018 contest if voter suppression hadn’t taken place. She has provided little evidence to support her claims.

The election was certified for Republican Kemp, 58, who won 50.2 percent of the vote, beating Abrams by about 55,000 ballots out of more than 3.8 million votes cast. Kemp was Georgia’s secretary of state before becoming governor.

Kemp reacted quickly to Abrams’s announcement, alleging that, if she had won the last election, “Georgia would have shut down, students would have been barred from their classrooms, and woke politics would be the law of the land and the lesson plan in our schools.”

“Her far-left agenda of open borders, gun confiscation, high taxes, and anti-law enforcement policies don’t reflect who we are as Georgians.”

Georgia’s Republican Party and Georgia’s Democratic Party hadn’t responded to Abrams’s campaign announcement by press time.

The two candidates differ on practically every policy issue, including restrictions on gun ownership and abortion access.

Kemp is already being primaried by former state Rep. Vernon Jones, a Democrat-turned-Republican, for taking a stance some conservatives feel wasn’t firm enough on electoral integrity.

Two other Republicans, activist Jonathan Garcia and teacher Kandiss Taylor, have also launched bids.

Republicans face the prospect of a shifting electorate that backed two Democrats in crucial U.S. Senate races in 2020 and helped usher President Joe Biden into office.

Biden has expressed support for Abrams while former President Donald Trump, once a Kemp fan, has said he doesn’t want the governor to win another term.
