Michigan Rep. Jewell Jones, a 26-year-old Democrat, was arrested on April 6 after he allegedly drunkenly drove his vehicle off the road and into a ditch. During the arrest, he refused to provide his license to police officers, and threatened to defund the police budget and call Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, another Democrat, ostensibly to punish them for the arrest.
Dash cam footage shows Jones standing in front of an ambulance, where he refuses to give police officers his driver’s license multiple times. “Take your hands off me and I’ll give you my stuff, take your hands off me, I got you,” said Jones at one point. When officers refused, and again asked him to produce his driver’s license, he said “I can’t do that” and was promptly taken to the ground by police.
Later in the video, Jones seems to repeatedly threaten retribution against the police officers and police as a whole. “Officer, you’re not going to be [inaudible] I’m telling you, it’s not going to be good for you. I’m telling you. I run y’alls budget, bro. I’m more important than y’all.”
He then seemingly threatened to end their careers by calling the Michigan governor. “When I call Gretchen [Whitmer], I’ll need y’alls IDs, and badge numbers, and everything. I told y’all already, I will sit here and give you all my sh*t, if y’all let me sit up, that’s all I’m saying.” As the video ends, Jones shouts, “I work with the police, do not f*ck with me, bro.”

Police repeatedly ordered Jones to stop resisting, ultimately adding another charge to his arrest. According to local media, “Jones was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and resisting arrest after a crash on I-96 near Fowlerville. State police troopers said they found Jones’ SUV with the vanity plate ELECTED in a ditch.” Jones also refused to take a blood test, but when later tested was determined to have “blood-alcohol content of 0.19% after a warrant was obtained — more than twice the legal limit.” He now faces charges “including resisting and obstructing officers — a felony — driving with a high blood-alcohol content, reckless driving and possessing a weapon while under the influence.”
