A pair of shock polls released this month by Harris Interactive have both placed Eric Zemmour, an anti-liberal thinker and staunch defender of French culture and identity, just in front of populist leader Marine Le Pen, but behind incumbent candidate Emmanuel Macron in the first round of France’s presidential election.
The two surveys – published on October 6, then on October 13 – revealed that Zemmour would garner 17 to 18 percent of the vote, ahead of National Rally leader Marine Le Pen who secured 16 percent in each poll, but also well behind French President Emmanuel Macron who took 27 percent of the vote.
In the election’s second-round run-off, however, Zemmour fared slightly worse than Le Pen, polling at 45 percent to Macron’s 55 percent.
Zemmour’s rise in the polls has been nothing short of meteoric.
“A candidate has never been known to experience such a change in voter intentions in so short a space of time as we’ve seen with Eric Zemmour,” Harris Interactive pollster Antoine Gautier said in response to polls shock results.
Le Pen’s diminished popularity is more than likely connected to her party’s dismal showing in the country’s regional elections which took place over the summer, where they failed to secure a single region.
Zemmour, who has yet to formally declare his presidential candidacy, has previously stated that while Le Pen enjoys a solid base, everyone in her party understands that she can never win a national election.
In the event that he’s victorious over Macron in the second round of the election, Zemmour has said that he would re-enact a law first introduced by Napoléon Bonaparte in 1803 which required French babies to have French names, as Big League Politics has previously reported.
