Authorities announced on Sunday afternoon that they had arrested the suspect who’s believed to have fatally shot a Georgia police officer outside his police department over the weekend.
Dylan Harrison, aged 26, had been working his first shift as a police officer for the Alamo Police Department in Wheeler County, Georgia when he was fatally shot outside of the police department in the early hours of Saturday morning, leaving behind his wife and a newborn child.
The suspect, 43-year-old Damien Anthony Ferguson, who’s believed to have targeted Harrison over a confrontation that occurred hours early, was arrested and taken into police custody on Sunday afternoon after officers executed a search warrant on his residence, following a day-and-a-half-long manhunt.
Lindsay Wilkes, the special agent in charge of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, confirmed that Harrison had been involved in an incident with one of Ferguson’s associates hours before the murder took place, adding that the officer had been forced to use his Taser when the suspect failed to comply with his directions.
“It is believed that the ambush-style attack on Officer Harrison was retaliation for the incident and the arrest of the man Friday night,” Wilkes said.
Following his arrest, Ferguson, who had previously served eight years in prison after he was convicted of assaulting a police officer in 1998, was charged with murder before being booked into the Laurens County jail.
According to Officer Down Memorial Page, a site that keeps track of law enforcement deaths, Harrison is the fifth police officer in the state to be killed in the line of duty this year.
Upon hearing about the tragic news, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp offered his condolences to Harrison’s family and the Alamo police department, writing on social media: “Early this morning, one of our law enforcement officials in Middle Georgia was killed in the line of duty. Our thoughts and prayers are with this officer’s family, friends, and colleagues at the Alamo Police Department.”
