In a refrain that is by now becoming familiar to residents of the Peach State, liberals are threatening to continue their never-ending crusade to ruin the livelihoods of people who disagree with them politically against the entire state of Georgia. Their current campaign involves a threatened boycott against Georgia-based companies unless they act with sufficient fervor to oppose Georgia’s new election reform law, which has been widely mischaracterized and vilified by liberal politicians, including President Joe Biden.
The first target of activists was Coca-Cola. Bishop Reginald Thomas Jackson, presiding prelate of the sixth district of the AME Church (which includes over 500 churches), called for a boycott of all Coca-Cola products because the company has not spoken out forcefully enough against the new law for his tastes. Our position is they’ve not lived up to their own words. By your silence you’re actually being complicit. So we’re going to say to them, if you want our money, then you ought to have our back.”
Coca-Cola put out numerous statements in support of the Black Lives Matter movement last year, and donated large sums of money to pro-BLM organizations. It has additionally adopted controversial corporate training programs for its employees that encouraged them to “be less white.” Still, Jackson and others feel it is not enough. Failed gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams said, “It is a dangerous thing for the business community to be silent. We are obliged at this moment to call for all voices to be lifted up. And for the alarm to ring not only through the communities that are threatened directly, but by those businesses that rely on the durability of our democracy.”
Other Georgia-based companies are likewise feeling the heat from liberal activists. Delta, Aflac, UPS, Home Depot and others are feeling the heat, too.
Of course, this is not new territory for Georgia. The state was loudly threatened with a boycott from Hollywood and film production companies in particular over the passage of a law in 2019 that outlawed abortion in any case when a fetal heartbeat could be detected. However, the boycott threats turned out to largely be empty, as production companies ultimately ended up staying put in Georgia despite their threats.
Some in Hollywood repeated their threats recently in response to the new Georgia law, as well.
