A majority of registered voters hold the Biden administration’s policies to blame for rising inflation, according to a Morning Consult/Politico poll.
The poll, which queried 2,000 registered voters from Oct. 16-18, found that 62 percent attributed inflation to the administration’s policies, a 3-point increase from July. Just 48 percent pointed to “Americans returning to pre-pandemic behaviors” as a cause of inflation, which is at a 13-year high.
Forty-one percent of Democratic voters also blamed the president’s policies for the inflation spike.
The poll also found a large increase in voters’ pessimism about the economy. Forty-seven percent of voters said they believe the economy will worsen in the next year, up from 38 percent in July. Voters of all political affiliations grew more worried about the economy over the last few months.
The Biden administration has faced scrutiny in recent months over the country’s growing economic challenges. Inflation has seen prices of essential products such as gas reach multi-year highs, while the economy has been slowed by a supply-chain crisis. Shortages have disrupted and slowed everything from school lunches to auto repair services.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Monday downplayed the country’s supply-chain issues, joking about the “tragedy of the treadmill that’s delayed.”
