The Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that the city of Minneapolis may place a ballot initiative to abolish the city’s police department on the November ballot, opening the door for the left-wing city to do away with the remnants of law enforcement as violent crime explodes.
The Supreme Court issued the ruling on Thursday. City residents will vote to abolish the police department with a new “Department of Public Safety” in November, in a model that would largely replace traditional law enforcement with drug counselors and social workers. A county judge had earlier ruled that the city was framing the ballot initiative in an illegal manner, with the state’s liberal Supreme Court authorizing to appear on the ballot.
Left-wing city councilors have pushed to abolish the Minneapolis Police, even as they move to hire the services of private security in response to the city’s explosion of violent crime. Hundreds of officers have retired from positions with Minneapolis Police, no longer willing to serve a community that doesn’t want them. The agency is heavily struggling to hire new officers, even resorting to bonuses to hire “temporary officers.” Most Minneapolis residents oppose reducing the number of police officers in the community, a cutback the public safety referendum would ensure.
Left-wing Democrats Ilhan Omar and Keith Ellison support abolishing the police department, whereas Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey opposes it.
Minneapolis residents have been terrorized by a city-wide increase in violent crime since the controversial death of George Floyd, with the Minneapolis Police largely retreating from troubled neighborhoods and law enforcement work in a gesture of submission to the city’s left-wing government.
