A display of United States and Marine Corps flags flying over a freeway in Riverside, California in honor of the 13 service members killed in a suicide bombing at the Kabul Airport was found vandalized on Tuesday.
The right half of the American flag was cut from the flag. Citizens affiliated with the Facebook group What is Going On in Riverside County first reported the anti-American vandalism. The flags had been placed on the fence to the Ivy Street overpass to the 91 Freeway in Riverside, days after eleven Marines, an Army Soldier and a Navy Corpsman were killed in an ISIS suicide bombing at the Kabul Airport.
The Riverside Police Department is actively investigating the act of vandalism, although it doesn’t have a description of any suspects in the crime as of yet. Authorities are confident that the flags were defaced in an intentional act. Community members have expressed outrage at the act of disrespect to America’s war dead, expressing dismay and surprise that those within the Riverside County community would commit such an act.
The flags have bee removed and will be given to a local troop of Boy Scouts for proper disposal procedures.
