Republicans Sweep County Elections in New York’s Long Island

Republicans raked in sweeping elections wins in Long Island on Tuesday, making gains that New York’s political establishment didn’t expect.

Republicans won county executive and comptroller races in Nassau County, a blue-leaning bellwether that President Joe Biden won by 10 points in the 2020 presidential election.

The wins amount to historic Republican gains in a traditionally liberal-leaning area of a blue state. Long Island isn’t anywhere as progressive as New York City, but the area voted for Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

Republican District Attorney candidates defeated Democratic competitors in Nassau and Suffolk counties, the two largest in Long Island. Longtime assistant prosecutor Anne Donnelly and Ray Tierney cited their Democrat opponents’ support of state bail reform legislation, which has allowed individuals charged with serious violent crimes to quickly leave the jail system before standing trial, at times offending yet again. New York state has suffered from an increase in violent crime as progressive state and local leaders enshrine new legal privileges for offenders.

Republicans are set to flip four seats in the Suffolk County Legislature, potentially even gaining control of the county government. Republicans bolstered their majority in the Nassau County legislature, which was already under their control before the 2021 elections

According to New York Young Republicans Club President Gavin Wax, the GOP flipped every District Attorney seat in Long Island. Nassau County is the most populous county on Long Island, which has a population of more than eight million people.

The GOP’s historic gains with white suburban voters, seen in Virginia and New Jersey- a constituency with which the party struggled in the 2020 presidential election- materialized in serious fashion in Long Island in 2021, with voters alienated by Democratic soft-on-crime and anarcho-tyrannical policies.

In what may amount to the greatest political shocker of the night, Republicans continue to compete for the governor’s palace in New Jersey, with Jack Ciattarelli dueling incumbent Democrat Phil Murphy in an election with outstanding margins of a few thousands votes. A truck driver who spent $153 on his campaign nearly unseated the Democrat Senate President of the New Jersey legislature.
